“I want y’all to know a secret,” R. Kelly said. “I’m working on a house album right now, and I want y’all to know, it’s coming. And y’all know, I love music and I feel like I can do anything when it comes to music because I am music — just like y’all.” – R Kelly
I know when we were all bumping and grinding to R Kelly’s “Trapped in the Closet’ none of us ever had any kind of inkling that the man would display an interest in house music, let alone decide to make an album out of the genre. I guess the need to make a house music album stems from a personal perspective for him. He grew up in Chicago listening to the great Dj Frankie Knuckles who recently departed. Frankie Knuckles created the classic version of house in Chicago and today every beat played in any club owes that to this legend. With his departure I guess R Kelly felt it was time to make what I could say an album about “sounds of his childhood.” R Kelly describes himself as a versatile artist and with over 40 million albums sold in the United States and twelve of those being solo albums the man has stamped his name on an industry that’s popping with new names every single year. There really is nothing to doubt, it’s going to be a great album, and if he messes up we will still love him anyway because he gave us Ignition (LOL) .Seriously speaking though I guess it’s the staying factor that he has, and fans. What kind of house music album would we expect from a person who has been in the music industry since 1989?
I’m a fan of R Kelly so my opinion is going to be severely biased. What kind of musical genre would we expect… maybe soulful house, afro beats, chilled jams to croon to on a Sunday afternoon? The speculation is widespread at this point. What about the artists he would work with? I definitely think one person R Kelly would definitely work with is Louie Vega. The man is a legend; he has carved a career that spans genres. From afro-beat, jazz, who can forget ‘Mambo Number 5” to Salsa and soul the man has made records of them all.
Moreover the man has become one of the best living Dj’s alive because he has not boxed himself into any category, he has moved with the times. Very much like R Kelly in this regard.
I think R Kelly making house music is a manifestation of the impact that House Music has had in the Americas, I predict that the album will be very much a dance album and a soulful album. It’s R Kelly after all. He is the Godfather of Soul. Making a house music album is a natural progression from soul after all. He has experimented with dancehall in the past and it worked out. I just hope for an afro-beat jam. That’s all I want, an Afro-Beat jam with R Kelly’s name on it.
